Course Description: 

Proficiency in public speaking is a key factor in achieving recognition in your scientific community. Nowadays, more and more informal talks, lectures and conferences are being held online. Being able to present yourself and your results convincingly, you can draw attention to your work and hence pave the way to scientific exchange or collaboration, and even career opportunities. To achieve this, thorough preparation and sufficient practice are crucial.

This training is aimed at participants who have had only limited experience at online or offline conferences so far. In the first part of this training, you will learn the basics for scientific presentations as well as how to deal with the special challenges of online presentations. In the second part you will prepare a short online presentation and give it as an exercise to get detailed feedback.

  • To set clear goals and adapt them to your audience
  • How to deal with the special challenges and requirements of addressing an online audience
  • How to deploy presentation aids in a targeted manner
Teaching methods: 

Theoretical input, group discussion, group feedback, self-study

This course fits doctoral candidates in the following phase: 

at the beginning of their doctorate │ during their doctorate

None.

Technical requirements: 

Laptop/tablet with stable internet connection, microphone, webcam, Zoom (in most cases). Pen and paper.

None.

Additional information: 

Please plan an additional two hour block in each of the first two afternoons for an individual working phase.

Dr. Markus Gyger obtained a PhD in biophysics from the University of Leipzig. Since 2011, he has been working as a freelance trainer and coach. He is certified as a systemic business coach by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
