The path to become pressure proof
Keywords: Coping with pressure, Imposter Syndrome, Elevator Pitch, Presenting yourself authentically
Introduction to the course topics:
Academia is a high-pressure and competitive environment. Academics are expected to excel at everything: their research, publications, teaching, and the impact they are making in their field. Juggling these multiple roles with multiple expectations can lead to anxiety and ultimately burnout.
While men and women respond differently to pressure and stress, both can suffer from imposter syndrome. So, how can we feel comfortable, confident, and in control in our own skin? A large part of becoming pressure proof is learning how to deal with rejection and rigorous academic standards while performing at the highest possible level.
In this workshop, participants explore the different ways men and women deal with pressure and stress; learn practical skills for coping, focus and productivity; examine and redefine the roles they play in their professional lives in order to gain clarity, direction, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Course aims:
- Participants learn tools and methods for coping with stress and high pressure situations as well as dealing with imposter syndrome
- Participants have a deeper understanding of how gender can affect our response to change and challenge
- Participants create an elevator pitch that they can adapt and use for multiple situations.
Teaching methods: This two-day workshop is designed to reach the target aims through meaningful practice, individual and group activities, theater-based activities (such as role play, character development) and exercises influenced by Amy Cuddy’s work on presence.
This course fits doctoral candidates in the following phase: At the beginning of the doctorate │ during the doctorate │ at the end of the doctorate
Participation requirements: All participants are required to have an initial 3-5 minute introduction (elevator pitch).
Technical requirements: none
