Course Description:

This workshop will guide you through your last steps towards finishing your doctorate, besides the mandatory publication. After years of specializing in your dissertation's subject, methods, and theoretical framework, you are required to condense or select your research, pinpoint the research gap and deliver your innovative results in an appealing manner. You might also be required to expand your focus on a variety of subject matters or even other fields, depending on your PhD regulations.

This seminar addresses all issues pertaining to the doctoral defense:

  • What are the aims of the doctoral defense?
  • How do I efficiently prepare for the defense?
  • How do I optimize time and self-management in the preliminary preparation stage
  • How do I design an interesting and fascinating research narrative?
  • How do I anticipate and deal with killer questions?
  • How do I deal with exam anxiety and stage fright?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The workshop includes a follow-up meeting, offering a number of tasks to choose from, ranging from (reworked) mock exams to individual tasks for all group members or a combination thereof.

The workshop gives two to three doctoral candidates the opportunity to prepare a full mock exam.

Methods: Group work, pair work, plenary discussions, trainer input, role-play, simulations of the viva voce.

This course will be conducted online.
