Course Description:

You have recently started your PhD full of enthusiasm. But even if you have the opportunity to intensively work on the research questions that are preying on your mind, you will probably be confronted with major and minor challenges until you finalize your doctoral thesis. As part of this course, we would like to equip you with a "starter kit": Together with you, we would like to work out how to deal with the various scientific and personal challenges you may face during your doctorate. At the same time, we will also provide you with specific information that will enable you to get a broad set of experiences and networks from your doctorate.

In this workshop, we will focus on the following topics:

  •     Surviving in the new environment: Communicating with your boss – lead the leader? Collaborating with your colleagues – be a “good” collague without being taken for a ride! Supervising students – assume the responsibility of being a leader yourself.
  •     Basics of good scientific practice: Knowing about the basic scientific standards – documentation, data storage, publications, legal aspects etc.
  •     Your doctorate – more than just lab and desk work: Communicating your research – not only, but also in the context of conferences. Building your scientific and professional network – outside and inside academia.
  •     Presenting yourself and your results: Learning about basic principles and approaches for presentation and self-marketing.
