Course Description: 

Mastering Negotiations in Science and Professional Life

Scientific careers are shaped by negotiations—whether discussing research ideas with supervisors, collaborating across disciplines, securing resources, applying for funding, publishing research, or negotiating future career opportunities in academia and industry.

This highly interactive workshop equips researchers with evidence-based negotiation strategies that can be applied immediately in both academic and professional contexts. Participants will work on realistic negotiation scenarios, receive structured feedback, and develop a practical framework for preparing and conducting high-stakes conversations.

Course aims: 
  • Develop a structured approach to preparing and conducting negotiations.
  • Apply evidence-based negotiation strategies in academic and professional contexts.
  • Build trust and manage difficult conversations effectively.
  • Recognize and avoid common psychological biases and negotiation traps.
  • Strengthen confidence through interactive negotiation simulations and feedback.

Jörn Basel is a professor of business psychology at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and specializes in negotiation, stakeholder management, and decision-making psychology. He trains executives and project managers and teaches communication and negotiation at national and international institutions, including the University of St. Gallen (HSG), ETH Zurich, Leuphana University of Lüneburg, and the United Nations.
