Course Description:

Academic life is a constant balancing act: advancing papers, fine-tuning presentations, preparing teaching, adjusting experiments – all while emails, online meetings and notifications pull your attention in every direction. Deep Work is the key future skill that makes the difference here: the ability to focus on truly important tasks for extended periods, without distractions and with visible progress.

In this workshop, we connect your individual research goals with the realities of a highly digital, fragmented working environment. Together, we sharpen your focus on what really matters in your project, define clear next steps and develop robust weekly routines that embed Deep Work in your everyday practice.

The aim is to establish regular periods of deep concentration in your tightly scheduled working day – and to move forward what truly matters.

Workshop content:

  • Deep Work vs Shallow Work: designing creative and efficient work routines
  • Making goals tangible (Big Rocks & MITs)
  • Sharpening and steering attention (including dealing with digital triggers)
  • “Recharge your research”: managing energy and breaks deliberately
  • Practice transfer, follow-up and individual coaching

An innovative course structure ensures optimal integration into practice.

Day 1 (5 hours): You learn the core concept of Deep Work and adapt it to your personal goals and routines, followed by implementation in daily work life.

Day 2 (3 hours): The second session strengthens commitment, addresses persistent challenges, and focuses on managing your energy levels in everyday work, followed by another practice phase.

Individual coaching (45 min): During a one-on-one coaching session with the trainer, you address specific questions, further optimise routines, or tackle remaining challenges.

Course aims:
  • Analyse your current work routines.
  • Strengthen your knowledge in self-organisation.
  • Learn to pursue goals in a focused, effective, and balanced way.
  • Develop specific skills adapted to digitalised work environments.
  • Gain immediately applicable practical knowledge and realise your individual Deep Work flow.
Teaching methods:

The course is designed to be interactive. A mix of practice-oriented input and exercises in individual, pair and group work creates a lively learning process. There is also dedicated space for sharing experiences and discussion. The workshop concept combines the benefits of face-to-face interaction, innovative online elements (collaboration tool “Miro”) and individual problem-solving in one-to-one coaching. The training is output-oriented: participants implement a proven workflow model directly in practice and adapt it to their own needs. In addition, they receive a handout, a visual summary of the results and a certificate of attendance. No prior knowledge is required – all doctoral researchers are welcome.

This course fits doctoral candidates in the following phase:

Beginning of the doctorate | During the doctorate | End of the doctorate

Participation requirements:

None.

Technical requirements:

Access to a laptop or computer with stable internet for online sessions and Miro workspace. A larger screen is helpful but not essential.

Course preparation:

It is advisable to briefly reflect beforehand on key steps in the coming weeks or months, as the workshop works with concrete goals concerning your research. Further details will be provided with the invitation.

Additional information:

Day 3 and 4 are reserved for the individual coaching session. Please block all times as indicated, otherwise we can't assign you a time slot!

What participants say about this course:
  • A lot of qualified input in short time slots, but with enough time for implementation/practice between the 3 workshop dates. I have already valuable output from it and the proposed methods are very fitting and feasible. The coaching was especially helpful. I could fit the course well into my working time.
  • Good timeline with splitting up the appointments and even an individual coaching. Addresses a crucial issue in modern work environments and gave me support and new impulses.
