Are you considering a career in the private sector where you will ‘turn science into things people need?’ That’s a very exciting choice, and of course, it’s where most of us scientists build our careers.
But many of us have questions about making this transition. You’ve spent years mastering your research field, but you were never told how to use it in industry. "If you want to work in industry, I can’t help you," they say—leaving you stranded and confused with how to get a job outside of academia.
In this workshop, I'll share the framework I've developed over 25 years in industry—the same system that I’ve taught thousands of doctoral candidates to design careers that leverage their unique strengths—while standing out to industry hiring managers!
If you're still not sure, you can watch a short video on the contents of this course.
- Know how to successfully start an industry career (get to know employers, score a job, work effectively in the job).
- Understand how and where your unique strengths as a scientist make you particularly well suited for an industry job.
- Figure out whether an industry career is a good option for you
- Understand the rules for productivity and habits for success in industry.
- Design your own rewarding career path in the private sector.
- Describe many private sector career options that fit scientists well and why.
- Use the most effective methods for getting a good industry job.
- Answer some of the most challenging interview questions you may encounter.
- Describe your research project in a way that will sound engaging to an industry manager who knows little about your research area.
The course is highly interactive, mostly based on lectures, discussions and interactive exercises. We aim to bring together the skills and experiences the trainer has gathered in academic and industrial settings.
We´ll use the following methods: Lectures sections with stories and case studies to illustrate key points, Interactive discussions with the whole group, Worksheets for self-reflection and development of career strategies and actions, Development of concepts in Individual or small group formats followed by presentation in plenary.

We will use a workbook titled Your Industry Career Playbook that the participants can take with them after the workshop to continue their career development planning. For online presentations, the worksheets are delivered in PDF format.
- The course gives specific and highly relevant insights into the possible careers of scientists.
- This course gave me more confidence by focusing on my strengths.
- The course is well-organized with several different modules and vivid examples.
- It was a terrific experience and David showcased the impact of his advice with his own personality and experiences, which is way more powerful than reading the same advice in a book for example.
- I liked the laid-back atmosphere with real stories, cases and examples as well as the good advice and explanations. The exchange of the trainer's personal experience was also very interesting.
After 25 years in industry, David Giltner brings both sides of the hiring table to each session. As a hiring manager, he's interviewed hundreds of Doctorates and PhDs for industry positions, seeing firsthand what separates successful candidates from the rest. As a career mentor he's taught thousands of scientists about successful transitions, drawing from real hiring decisions. As a published author of 3 books and holder of 7 patents, David delivers industry hiring tips others never taught you.
