Introduction to the course topics:

Graphics, charts and diagrams have it in them! Meaningful and visually appealing images can effectively convey your results at a glance and help you to attract attention to your publications and posters. However, designing meaningful images is not that easy. It is often not immediately clear to your viewer what your data is supposed to show and the design is not always as appealing as you would like it to be. In this workshop, you will learn to select your data in a targeted manner and to support the core message contained through the strategic use of design elements such as color, text, size and white space.

Course aims:

• participants are able to formulate a concise key message
• participants are able to identify an appropriate chart for their particular message
• participants are able to focus their audience's attention on the most important parts of their data through a targeted use of design elements supporting their key message

Teaching methods: Short input sessions followed by individual and small group work, case discussions and example analyzes in small group work, application of learnings on own examples in individual work & personal feedback from the trainer

This course fits doctoral candidates in the following phase: during their doctorate │ at the end of their doctorate

Participation requirements: The work is mainly conceptual, but it is advantageous if you have a laptop with Excel or similar at your disposal. In the workshop, you will practice what you have learned directly with your own examples. Therefore, please bring your own data sets and possibly already existing diagrams.
