Introduction to the course topics:

The workshop provides an overview of the German research an innovation system and addresses the particularities of conducting research in higher education institutions, non-university organisations and the private sector. It explores essential professional skills to become an independent, internationally visible researcher and raises strategic issues in career development, such as geographic, thematic and intersectoral mobility. The programme aims to assess the current researcher position, to identify individual career goals and to develop a road map for how to achieve them.

Course aims:

  • Understanding the structure of the German research and innovation landscape and reflecting the individual career opportunities
  • Understanding the individual career priorities
  • Identifying and evaluating the individual options and developing a personal action plan

Teaching methods: Presentation of the trainers, individual and group work, individual coaching session (2nd course day)

This course fits doctoral candidates in the following phase: during their doctorate │ at the end of their doctorate

Technical requirements: Laptop/tablet with Zoom for individual online coaching

Additonal information, notes: Preparatory activities are to be completed individually at the individual pace before the start of the workshop (allocate up to 1.5 hrs in total).

Dr. Thomas Koch is a research management consultant, business trainer and coach since 2016. Before that, he worked as a research manager and senior administrator for 12 years (RUB, LMU) and 10 years as a researcher (UK, CH). He holds a PhD in physical chemistry.

Dr. Anke Soemer holds a PhD in Political Science (Cooperation in European Science and Technology Policy) and works in the field of Research Policy and Strategy at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft since 2015. She has experience as a Consultant, Trainer and Coach in Science and Technology (6 years) and worked for 20 years in Science management and as a Leader in HR at the Max Planck-Gesellschaft.
