In conference talks and poster sessions, researchers need to transport their messages clearly and effectively so that the audience can understand and remember the key contribution and benefits.
This seminar uses a range of interactive activities and feedback to develop your rhetorical skills and presentation competence for international conferences. The training develops areas such as argumentation, structure, body language, voice and slide & poster design.
The training provides a frameworks for developing own talks and applying rhetorical techniques to create clearer arguments and messages. The interactive format gives participants the opportunity to prepare and deliver short presentations as well as practice in dealing with difficult questions.

Brief theoretical input sessions followed by application of individual skills in small groups; Constructive group feedback and video feedback; Short studies of good video examples to highlight rhetorical techniques; Holding own short research presentations.

Assignment: Please prepare a 6-8 minute conference talk about your research. You will be presenting to mostly non-experts. If you do not want to present your doctoral project, you are welcome to present your master’s project.

Originally from South Africa, Tim Korver holds an MA in Applied Linguistics. His key interests lie in the rhetoric and argumentation of scientific research. As a trainer, he enjoys supporting researchers in how to communicate their findings so that the audience understands the relevance and what it brings to the field. He holds seminars and coaching at research institutes across the country where he also focuses on ‚Scientific writing‘, ‚Reasoning and Argumentation‘ and supporting researchers in grant applications such as the DFG and ERC.
