Beschreibung Kursinhalt:

At international conferences, research talks can be divided into the poster session and the classic conference talk. In these presentations, researchers need to bring across their messages clearly and effectively so that the audience can understand and remember the key information.

In this seminar we will apply a range of interactive activities and feedback to develop your argumentation and rhetorical skills for international conferences. Here we will look at areas such as body language, voice, argument structure, and poster layout and design.

The training will provide you with a framework for developing your own talks and applying rhetorical techniques to create clearer messages. The interactive format gives participants the opportunity to prepare and deliver short presentations as well as practice in dealing with difficult questions.

Assignment: Please prepare a 6-minute conference talk about your research. If you do not want to present your PhD project, you are welcome to present a different topic such as your master’s project.

Key content:

  • How to connect with your audience
  • Structuring your talk with clear argumentation
  • Emphasizing key messages
  • Creating a catchy introduction and clear conclusion
  • How a poster session is different to a conference talk
  • Defining principles of good poster design and layout

By the end of the seminar, you will be able to:

  • ensure a clearer structure in your talks to help convey your messages
  • apply suitable rhetorical techniques for transmitting your messages
  • adopt an appropriate style for interacting with your audience
  • adopt a clear format for your visuals
  • deal more competently with difficult questions

Tim Korver will conduct this course in English.
